Roll into spring on Esplanade Tranquille

Information on the activity

May 11, 2024 to May 12, 2024

Esplanade Tranquille is trading in its ice rink for a roller-skating oval! On May 13 and 14, discover every aspect of this unique sport. In collaboration with Lowlife and the Montréal Roller Derby League, try out the equipment for free and take some introductory lessons, take part in a roller skating dance party and cheer on your favourite roller derby team.

Introduction to roller skating with Lowlife

You’re invited to get to know this relatively uncommon sport with the staff of the Lowlife skate shop, who will help you get rolling. Their experts will teach introductory techniques, and the required equipment* will be loaned for free.

*Limited quantities : 30 pairs of roller skates are available for 30 minute sessions. Participants are encouraged to bring their own protective gear (helmet, knee/wrist/elbow pads).

Roller Disco with Lowlife

A groovy evening open to all, with music by DJ Plastik Patrik, for initiated or aspiring skaters, with entertainment and two not-to-be-missed events: A choreography at 8pm and 9pm live from the Esplanade Tranquille, directed by Marilyn Basbous alias Marly, dancer and roller dance teacher in Montreal, with her students. Free skate loan from Lowlife.

Find out more about Marly and her squad

Marly started her journey in movement through dance from a young age with classical ballet, latin and ballroom to hip hop and Baladi. She has now honed and developed her love for rhythm and musicality on quad skates, integrating different disciplines into Roller Dance. She is currently teaching quad skate and roller dance classes in Montreal in addition to hosting international guest skater workshops and performing in shows and events with her peers and students.

Roller derby demonstration by the Montréal Roller Derby League (MTLRD)

Did you know that the Montréal Roller Derby League (MTLRD) has been a global leader in the roller derby scene for a decade? Founded in 2006 by the force of nature that is Georgia W. Tush, MTLRD has become the Canadian leader with three local teams, a B team (Les Sexpos de Montréal) and an A team (Les New Skids on The Block).

On Esplanade Tranquille, the A and B teams will play an open-air friendly in MTLRD’s trademark spirit of inclusive competition.

Please note that alcohol consumption is not allowed in public.
